EXAMINATION
I went to the doctor-
He Reached down my throat,He pulled out a shoe And a little toy boat, He pulled out a skate And a bicycle seat, And said, " Be more careful About what you eat."

Hyperbole is overstating the situation. In this case the items the doctor indicates the patient has eaten are highly unlikely if not impossible to swallow.

As almost everyone agrees it is hyperbole. A dress would not take a week to dry: it would mildew by then. And the rose bush could not literally reach the heavens. They are exaggerations to give you a mental picture of the dress and the rose bush. That makes them descriptive hyperbole. In the case of the dress, it is answering the question How long? which is the job of an adjective or adverb, which makes it descriptive. Instead of the hyperbole, what if the sentence read."her white dress was very long." Same with the rosebush"so tall" How tall? again acting as an adverb, describing tall. Hyperbole in drama or literature can be used to develop a character like Othello's speech to Iago, "If thou dost slander her and torture me, Never pray more; abandon all remorse; On horror’s head accumulate; Do deeds to make heaven weep, all earth amazed; For nothing canst thou to damnation add Greater than that." From this you know the extreme anger Othello is capable of, That he can be murderously dangerous when it comes to even thinking his love is unfaithful. Hyperbole can be used for comic effect, "that girl's feet were so big if she stamped her heel on Monday, her toe would be kicking in Tuesday." But overused hyperboles advance nothing; they are simply trite, hackneyed phrases of an anemic imagination. How many times have you heard, "You’ve grown like a bean sprout" or "I’m older than the hills."

Hyperbole = extreme exaggeration.

2 things = doctor can't reach down throat, you can't swallow a shoe, toy boat, skate, and bicycle seat

It's a hyperbole because it greatly exagerates the importance of eating well. Instead of having eaten all sweets and candy, the subject in question ate a boat, a skate, etc.

If I've told you ONCE, I've told you A MILLION times - don't exaggerate!!!
As it is impossible to eat those things - or have a hand down your throat - it is all hyperbole, underlying/emphasising the last line's call for proper eating.

Because it's extreme, obvious exageration - that's what hyperbole means! Another example is "To wait an eternity", of course you don't really wait an eternity! We prob use hyperbole every day in sarcasim!
