The interior light and the radio all come on as well. However, it will not start. I can try to start two times and nothing. Usually on the third try, the car starts, although slightly sluggishly. The battery is brand new. Any ideas?

The car did this a few weeks ago. I replaced the battery and everything seemed fine for about two weeks. Then suddenly, it started again. This is a 99 Toyota Corolla

could be a bad starter, bad connection somewhere, bad solenoid ,a bad neutral safety switch. or the battery may not be as good as you think it is. start with the basics. jump it with another car, and see if it's better that way. it would help to know what kind of car we are talking about there.

First, check if the battery cables are loose. Also, it's not uncommon for a new battery to be low on juice. Auto part stores or mechanic shop should not have batteries exceeding 8 months old. Reading the date code sticker is easy. It has a letter followed by a number. The letter A=Jan, B=Feb, C=March, etc...the number is the year. Have the battery checked. If the battery has been sitting on the ground for a few days. Whether it be at the store, garage, or your own home..it'll suck the life right out of the battery.

New battery is great, but, when it was replaced, did they clean the inside of the battery terminals.

There is a black type of scale that builds up and prevents high amperage draw from the battery.

Sure, everything else works because they don't draw a lot of power like your starter does.

Remove and clean you battery terminals on the inside.

Most likely a loose connection on your battery terminals. A bad connection will allow enough power for the lights and radio, but not enough for the starter. Take the connectors off, clean them, and reconnect. Make sure they are tight and won't move when you wiggle them.
