Blood diamonds are diamonds that are sold to profit a war. For example, say a group of people revolting against the government in a country sell diamonds from their mines to raise money to buy guns to kill people in their revolution. Though their cause may be just, the diamonds have nontheless been sold improperly and have been sold to raise money used in killing people. That's how they get to be called Blood Diamonds. There are diamonds for sale that have exchanged hands in this manner, but there are many more out there that have a valid history and come with a number that corresponds only to that diamond so you can make sure that your diamond did not sponsor anyone's death.

A blood diamond (also called a conflict diamond or a war diamond) is a diamond mined in a war zone and sold, usually clandestinely, in order to finance an insurgent or invading army's war efforts.

Blood diamonds are diamonds which are being used to fund various rebel and terrorist groups in Africa.
The idea is simple. In southern africa there are diamond mines. If the people running those diamond mines are evil, and are killing people, then the act of buying those diamonds and funding their evil is an evil act too.
So the diamonds are "paid for in blood."
a more rational name would be "Conflict diamonds."

Most people are unaware of the role diamonds play in bringing real benefits to people in the countries around the world where diamonds are sourced. Nowhere is this more evident than in Africa. It is also in Africa that this same resource has been used to fund conflict. In 2000, a coalition of governments, non-governmental organizations and the diamond industry worked together to address this issue. In 2002, they established the Kimberley Process Certification System, a UN-backed process that has virtually eliminated the trade in conflict diamonds. Today, over 99% of the world's supply of diamonds is from sources free of conflict. Diamondfacts.org is dedicated to presenting the facts about conflict diamonds, along with how diamonds are driving economic growth and prosperity in countries around the world.
