KT, this is a HUGE question. First, understand that WW I was almost entirely preventable. That being the the political wranglings of Otto von Bismark several decades earlier that tied everyone into defensive contracts. To that end, had those agreements been broken or renegotiated sooner, the war may never have happened, Lenin would never have crossed over into Russia and communism may never have been born there. The Weimar Republic would not have come into power and so Hitler would not have found a platform and power. WW II would not have taken place. See how all of this ties in together? The U.S. may never have found its strength and become a super power and it's industrial growth would probably have been much slower taking with it, the economy.
WW I also found a military use for the airplane and gave introduction to the tank as a weapon. The cavalry quickly found its death in WW I because of the airplane and the tank. The war was also a proving ground for equipment and tactics to be used in future wars.
Without WW I, at a cost of an average of 98,000 men a month, medicine and the techniques employed would not have advanced as they did.
It's all a huge cascading effect and it's hard to say really what would have been had that war never happened. But you need to look at Otto von Bismark as a great starting point.
