5y = -4x + 50
y = -4/5x + 10

slope = -4/5

2006-12-17 09:22:34 · answer #1 · answered by Jim Burnell 6 · 0 0

First: solve for "y" and make sure "y" is on the left side of the equation: subtract 4x from both sides:

4x - 4x + 5y = 50 - 4x
5y = - 4x + 50

divide 5 by everything:
5y/5 = - 4x/5 + 50/5
y = - 4x/5 + 10

Second: the slope is the number/fraction beside the "x" variable:

slope = - 4/5

4x+5y=50

You just need to write it out as a linear equation by putting 'y' on one side of the equation by it's self. Once you've done that, then you automatically know that the number next to 'x' is your slope.

Using the equation: y=mx+b

1st subtract 4x from both sides

4x+5x=50
-4x -4x

2nd divide EVERYTHING on both
sides by five

5y=-4x+50
/5 /5 /5

Your slope is the fraction next to
the x variable! -4/5

x=-4/5x+10

I hope this helped!

1) subtract 4x from each side
5y = -4x+50
2) divide each side by 5

y = -4/5x + 10

so the slope is -4/5

uhm, 50 divided by 5y = 10, so m=10.

I think.
