It really depends on your personality and your lifestyle. I have owned tons of different breeds of dogs over the years and although I loved the dog I never fell in love with a breed until I met and then got my first Labrador Retriever. They are the most versatile, LOVING, LOYAL, INTELLIGENT, affectionate, and devouted dog. Mine goes swimming, camping, hiking, watches TV, goes sledding, and goes everywhere with me. And at a year and half knows over 75 words and commands. They are the greatest dogs, for family or just as a single person. Their favorite thing to do is be with you and they are not a hard dog to train.

Personality and care are key. Large dogs usually have a better temperament, but demand more exercise and food...and won't live as long. The AKC (American Kennel Club) has defined about 100 standard breeds with somewhat predictable personalities and needs. You should pick up a book on all the breeds, or, even better, go to a dog show and see what appeals to you. This is not to say you must get a pure breed, but even if you get a hybrid it can be helpful to know about what breeds may have influenced it. If you go the purebred route, you can meet the breeder and really get a thorough understanding about the dog you might own.

Some large breeds that rarely disappoint are golden retrievers, laboradors, and border collies. Train these (or any dog) well and you will have a friend for [it's] life.

it depends on your personality. Are you out going? if so get something like a border collie. If your easy going try a basset hound or great dane. I personally prefer big dogs over little ones. There are so many different kinds of dogs to choose from. Or you could save a dog from death and get it from the pound.I prefer big dogs as i said before however i have basset hounds. They are great and you can go online and get them pretty cheap. I got mine off the web site< puppyfind.com>. So good luck

Usually people have different tastes in dogs, and I've always heard dogs resemble their owner's personality. This should be a little helpful in choosing a doggy. I love shihtzu's, pugs, yorkies, chihuahuas(i like small dogs) Good Luck on your search=)

I just got my first dog a year ago and I got a yellow Lab. I wouldn't change her for the world. She is so loving and very easy to train.

You should get a poodle, because they are really cute and they're easy to take care of.
