I'm usually good with movies like that. I completely "got" movies like Donnie Darko, Memento, Pulp Fiction, Vanilla Sky and Twelve Monkeys--but this made no sense. It was still a good movie, but even after a few times watching it I'm still confused. Someone please explain...

I don't think we're meant to understand. Even David Lynch, the director, has refused to comment on the actual meaning of the film and has left it up to his viewers to interpret as they see fit, rather like a good piece of art. He's famous (or perhaps infamous) for his use of surreal imagery and disorienting time/character/continuity shifts in his movies. I enjoyed watching the movie and the stories within stories that are presented during the film, and it seemed to me that Lynch's main goal is for us to realize that the characters are not as important as the experiences they have and the stories they tell. Who's who? It doesn't matter. I think that that's a main part of the shift in actors/characters when Rita opens the Pandora's box that she gets in the theater. Everyone is suddenly living everyone else's life and telling a story that was only previously hinted at. There are also scenes that hint at the possiblity that portions (if not the entire movie) are part of a dream, or even a delusion, in the mind of either Rita or Betty.
Anyway, you'll probably receive many interpretations of this film and what people felt that it meant, but that's the genius of it. This movie could mean many things, and that's what I enjoy so much about it!

all the scenes where naomi watts is famous are all a dream. In reality she is a struggling and possibly talentless actress and she is left by her girlfriend. I can´t remeber the movie exactly but i know that at a point she starts dreaming. there are various clues in that there are things she sees in real lif e at the start of the movie which are referred to in later stages of the movie in subtle ways. I think the actress in the movie poster is one of them.
I´m not sure if i´m saying it right but what i am sure about is that at some point in the movie she is dreaming.

Yeah, this is a tough one. David Lynch is a freak. Have you seen Erasurehead? Another weird movie by him. If you like those trippy, what the hell is going on type movies, check out The Fountain. That one is open to many interpretations.

This site has some pretty good takes on what is going on:

my theory is that it's a masturbation fantasy. When the girl is masturbating and crying that is the point where the characters change places. She is in a worse station in life and things are really different. So up to that point, to me, is her fantasy of how it should be.
