My car has recently been hit by a van and has broken my wing mirror (drivers side). The electrics are all still in place, the mirror itself is fine and the back of the mirror is also fine, it's only the front casing which is smashed and the bit that attaches to the car. I couldn't find anywhere which could sell me the parts I needed so have had to buy a whole mirror.

How do I replace it without breaking the electrics, etc?

On the inside of the door, there is a small plastic panel at the rear of the mirror unit. Remove this carefully as it will be clipped in place by plastic lugs.

When removed you will find a connector for the electrical wires. Unplug this. There will be possibly three screws holding the mirror assembly to the door. Remove these but holding the mirror as so it doesn't fall. The screws might have an unusual head type but you can buy the BIT from most motor stores.

Then, when the old one is removed just hold the new one to the door and replace the screws, connect the plug for the wires and replace the plastic trim.
Job done.

The backside of the mirror glass has button snaps glued to it.

It SHOULD just pop off the anchor points inside the mirror housing.

Pull gently at one side on your damaged mirror glass to look behind it to make sure.

It sounds like you've the "joystick" variety with the former cable administration. regrettably, you're gonna haveta replace the finished element - cable and all. The cable both broke or you've a lot slack in it that you may't bodily modify it. it ought to ward off some money with the help of replacing it with a "guide" reflect (no cable administration, the kind that basically mounts to the door)
