if you have a firewall, block the ports that the instant messenger uses. This will probably get her frustrated and give up eventually.

It's called "Parental Controls". If chat is on a program (ex. Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger) then you have to uninstall the chat:
1. Click Start then Run.
2. Type in Control Panel and press OK.
3. Dbl-click on the Add-Remove programs and remove the chat software.

Block internet chat:
1. Click Start then Run.
2. Type in Control Panel and press OK.
3. Double-click on Internet Options and click on Security.
4. Click on the restricted sites picture on the white bar.
5. Click on the "Sites" button under the Restricted sites picture that you clicked.
6. Type in a chat site at a time and click Add.
7. Click OK and then OK on the other settings window.

There. Restart IE and you're done!

Hope I was of help!

It's a little tricky to do. You can start by uninstalling the chat program like AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger. But, I am sure you your daughter is smart enough to reinstall them.

The next step would be to use a firewall program like Zonealarm and block the data ports that these program use. If you do this, they won't be able to logon to that messenging service. The hard part is to find which ports each service use.

I believe AIM uses port 443 and Yahoo Messenger uses 5050 and MSN Messenger uses 1863. I am hoping you have an I.T. or computer friend who can help you with this. It seems simple, but it's complicated to explain how to actually set it up.

Well, you could put a password on Windows so she won't be able to even get on the computer. People can chat anywhere, even Yahoo! has chat, which is web-based and can't be deleted. You could delete AIM, but chances are she'd just download it again. I'd suggest getting a timer, letting her have some time each day, then shutting off the PC when the timer rings (protected with your password so she can't get back on).

Well, if it is a website, I think you can download a WebWatcher program, or parental controls to block the site.

If it is a chat program (i.e. Yahoo! Messenger or MSN Messenger), just go to Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs. Find the chat program there, click it, then click "Remove".

Chat rooms have different ways to connect. I would need to know which chat rooms you are talking about in order to answer correctly.

Also if you are speaking of Instant Messaging, yes, it can be blocked. Much easier than chat rooms.

maybe instead of blocking it try talking to her about it. tell her you would like her to spend less time chatting. then give her an alternative to chatting like play with a sibling. it will cause less drama between the two of you. its better in the long run

You can by setting parental controls. I take it she is a teenager?. Have been there. Your much better setting a time limit, Else she will just go to her pals. Tell her 2 hours a night. Give her some space and although we always worry, least it's in a controlled place. Regards...

Use your firewall Program Permissions. Block access to the internet. Make sure you either have a password to change your firewall settings or set her up with a limited account so she can not change the permissions.
