I had a Euro Hist professor who used to joke that before MArcoPolo the entire continet of Europe was forced to wear burlap underwear. Then silk was discovered and it felt a whole lot better so they sent MarcoPolo to go get some, which set off a chain reaction of historical events that we now learn about in western civ classes. So basically the entire history of western culture can be attributed to the desire to not wear burlap underwear.

From what I understand, marco Polo was simply searching for spices and ways to preserve food and dead people when he went to asia.
