i love wearing black eyeliner but by the end of the evening i look like a racoon. how can i stop my eyeliner from smudging

I apply a bit of neutral or nude eyeshadow below my eyes, it keeps the eyeliner from smudgin because there is no moisture, but it really depends on the quality.

You might be putting on too much. When you put on your eyeliner put it on in a dotted line then smudge it together to make it a straight line. This look is also good if you're going for a sexy smokey look.

y not buy a water proof eyeliner, it does not smudge or fade else you can wear smudge proof kohl pencil, i have the same prob and i use the nivea stayon kohl, its really good and does not smudge and lasts long, try it! also see that the area around the eyes do not get oily, use a concealer and poweder around the area before applying eyemakeup.

and dont touch your eyes
because that's what prbbly smudging it
always carry a mirror and check on it too

You have to check it so often. I wear it too. You have to be willing to maintain it.
