Help With Essay Ideas???

Question

In Language class at my school I have to write a persuassive essay...and I'm totally clueless about what my topic should be...so could you help?

I need a topic that seems to cause controversy, here are some examples: abortion, gay marriage, child abuse, and animal abuse.

I would really like to do an essay that involves music somehow, but I'm open to any and all suggestions and ideas!

How about why fat people are discriminated against in the music industry. Think about it...for example - one rather large guy felt that he needed 2 guys to lip sinc his music for him because he was afraid he wouldn't be accepted just on his good voice alone (Milli Vanilli)
Most singers that are overwieght are pressured into losing it...and music execs will choose skinny with good voice than fat with excellent voice. There are exceptions of course (Ruben Studdard's well deserved victory on American Idol) (and opera singers) but the majority of singers get made fun of if they gain weight or are just overweight.

I once did a college paper on child abuse and found some disturbing facts from history. In the middle ages, children were wrapped tightly on boards and hung on the wall by the fire to keep warm while the mother was busy with her chores. Many infants died this way from the heat and smothering from the tight wrappings. When they died, they were thrown out the window onto rubbish piles. Child abuse is not something new. Even the Bible tells of horrors commited on infants and children in the early days of this planet.

Don't do like abortion and gay marriage because it will look like you didn't put much into thinking about a persuasive topic. Too many people are going to go with that topic. I would probably do it on why Bush should be impeached.
If you are going with something about music....I think i would write about why some types of music should be banned. I seriously think that its some music that are corrupting our children's mind and editing doesn't really do too much.

You want to do music? How about the ethics of downloading music off the Internet? One one side you have the downloaders and file sharers who get ticked off when they see the record labels making obscene profits, often by charging exorbitant prices for CD's and keep a lot of money that they should be paying their talent. Then, they cry that music piracy is killing them. On one side, you have the downloaders . On the other side are the record companies, who have sunk money into discovering, developing and marketing their talent, and the artists themselves who lose out on royalties...not that it affects a Garth Brooks or Madonna any, but many independent artists need that payment to help them stay in the business.
There are other facets of the issue, and when you dig into it, it becomes a fascinating subject.

If you don't want to talk about banning music, you could take a stand on whether or not music leads young people to violence, or sex. Or, you could take a stand on whether or not music videos lead young adolescents to engage in sex early. A thesis sentence example would be:
Rap music does not lead to violence among teenagers.

I did a persuasive speech on stem cell research. Very controversial, especially embryonic stem cell research. You need to do alot of research on it though.
