What you are seeing are eye floaters. It's very common and you're not going mad or hallucinating. Here is a link that will tell you more about it. Don't worry about it, most people see them at some time.

I heard that it had something to do with either blood pressure or the optic nerve. I would get anything checked out to be sure. Does it happen at a specific time or after activity? Like if you get up to quickly, run, go up a flight of stairs, or just wake up, when you are tired?

Sorry probably not much help, I get flashes that kinda move like a snake, that seem to be in a checkerboard way, but my doc says thats just the precursor to one of my migranes.

Best of luck to you

theyre called "floaters".they are from when ur eye is forming b4 birth, just little protein particles floating in the vitreous(or aqueous-one of the eyeball fluids, anyway.)most people see them.they are more visible as a person ages due to various changes in the eye,but some people, like myself, see them from childhood.i was 10 when i asked the eye dr about it and he explained and said not to worry.however,if u see flashes of bright, jagged or cascading lights, followed by headaches, that would be a "migraine aura>"if u bump or hurt urself, then see flashes of light,go to dr immediately, that could mean ur retinas are detaching!but from what u described, probly just floaters.
