We left the teapot on the burner long after the water was gone. Now there are white flakes on the bottom, we think they're boron from the local water.

Fill it with water again and some baking soda, let it simmer. It is water sediment that is left.

That should fix it.

If you soak, wash & scrub it you should be able to use it again unless there is a hole in it. If every teapot that boiled dry was replaced with a new one, teapots would be as big a business as Microsoft. If you had drunk all the water in the teapot would you still be afraid of the Boron in the water? Good luck!

It is calcium carbonate (lime) yes kind of off white flakes. Ignore it or soak it out with vinegar. It will not dissolve back into the water. Places with very hard water having lots of calcium salts in it will load it up in kettles even when they are not boiled dry. These calcium salts are the same stuff that combines with soap to leave that greasy ring around the tub.

trust that it is not boron. Boron salts dissolve into the water again.

the sediment is just from the water, proper cleaning will get the flakes out etc.
Stainless steel is pure steel, not coated inside, only the outside is/or can be coated with chrome etc, but moreover if you have a s/s pot, theres nothing to chip off or tamper with your water.
clean it, and boil it out.

just clean it out with cleaner that comes in a container and it will clean the sediments out of the tea kettle .you can buy it at just about any store.

Just rinse it out. It is what you would have been drinking anyway-think about it.
