Is there anything that you can do to help a young baby - under a month old - that seems to be bunged up with mucus. He sneezes quite a lot and it seems to get worse when he is crying and sometimes at night.

The saline and bulb syringe (aka snot sucker) will do wonders.

Don't try to spray the saline, just let it drip in. - If baby really hates it then go ahead and stop. The saline itself isn't as important as the snot sucker.

After a sneeze quickly wipe baby's nose then try the bulb syringe.

Slightly elevate the head of baby's bed. This will help promote drainage while sleeping.

Make an appt to discuss this with your doctor. Most likely it's no big deal but there's a super slim chance it could be related to what baby is eating or some other allergic reaction.

And don't forget that your local pharmacist is a great source of information too!

When you left the hospital you were probably given a bulb syringe. It has an end that blows air when you squeeze it. I've heard that those can irritate the inside of an infants nose and cause swelling. Don't use it! They now sell new ones that are more blunt at the tip to prevent it from getting to far into the babies nasal passage. You can also use saline nose mist. As long as there are no medicinal ingredients, it is safe for infant use. It isn't much fun though. Humidifiers are also helpful. If you don't have one, boil a pan of water and stand near it, (not over it obviously, steam can burn!), or turn the hot water on in your shower and let it run with the bathroom door closed. If you live in a cold area, you can try bundling your little one in blankets and standing outdoors for a few minutes. Good luck I know it isn't fun!

Sneezing is normal for babies. Our pediatrician gave us Baby Ayr to help clear congestion. Lay baby on back and put 2-6 drops in each nostril. Use the bulb to suction it out. It helps get rid of some of the mucus. But don't do it too often, it will irritate the lining of their nose and make congestion worse. We used this for our baby at around 2 months of age. He's now 4 months and congestion has improved.

you may need to invest in a humidifier. you can also buy a saline nasal spray for the little one from the pharmacy, it is safe for babies and clears up the mucus really well. i know this sounds disgusting, but if it comes to a point that you really feel that you dont know what else to do, you can suck out the mucus from her nose (a bit like a vacuum cleaner). get some eucalyptus oil and mix a tiny bit with baby oil and rub her chest, back, soles of her feet and gently rub her head, put socks on & keep her warm and snug. Keep breastfeeding her as mothers milk will soon heal whatever illnesses she has. HTH Peace out. K

1.
Common cold symptoms and care
The most obvious sign of a cold is a runny or blocked nose. Your baby might also have a cough and a raised temperature. There is no cure because it is caused by a virus but you can help in other ways.

The best form of treatment is lots of rest and plenty of fluids.
Help keep their airways clear by wiping their nose gently every so often.
If a blocked nose is making feeding time difficult, try using saline (salt water) nose drops just beforehand. These are available from your pharmacist.
If your baby has a fever and is older than 2 months*, a medicine such as Calpol Infant Suspension can help to bring their temperature down.
If your baby is 3 months+* and has a fever, an ibuprofen-based medicine such as Calprofen could be particularly effective.
Help them to breathe and sleep more easily at night by placing a pillow under the head of their mattress.

For the younger child who cannot blow his nose:
Place 3 drops of warm water or saline in each nostril. (If your child is younger than 1 year old, use only 1 drop at a time and do 1 nostril at a time). After 1 minute use a soft rubber suction bulb to suck out the loosened mucus gently. To remove secretions from the back of the nose, you will need to seal off both nasal openings completely with the tip of the suction bulb on one side and your finger closing the other side. If you cause a nosebleed, you are putting the tip of the suction bulb in too far. You can get a suction bulb at the drugstore for about $2. Try to buy a short, stubby one with a clear-plastic mucus trap

Snufflebabe not vicks.Vicks too strong for tiny babe and will give them headache. Also Snufflebabe has such cute name. Put 3 drops lavender and 3 drops eucalyptus essential oil in hot water and put on opposite side of room to babe. I wouldn't advise putting saline up their nose as will just make them cry surely. Also not sort of thing you want to be doing to your tiny baby really.
My second daughter born really mucusy and it took a good few months to clear. Just keep them comfortable and help them cough it up when you can. (ie if the cough some up wipe it off their tongue before they swallow it-nice)
Good luck

It is very common for young babies to be congested. What you can do is place a few drops of normal saline nose doprs in the babies nose and then suction it out with a bulb syringe. I would also elevate the babies mattress so that he is not lying flat on his back, this way the mucous doesn't accumulate in his throat and will make it much easier for the baby to breath.

id take him to the docs but in the mean time massage thesides of the nostrils and the base of the eye sockets to where they meet the nose ever noticed when someone has a bad head or blocked feeling they pinch their nose it does eleaviate the pressure and allows the mucus to flow dont put him on a pillow as its dangerous but try putting one under his mattress to raise his head to allow for flow also
