My favorite right now is "Grey Gardens" - it's awesome. But, also, "The Drowsy Chaperone," "Wicked," "Avenue Q," "Hairspray," and "Jersey Boys" are all super-fun evenings in the theatre.
If you just want to laugh hysterically, "Spamalot" is the funniest musical ever written IMO. "The Color Purple" is also quite good - though I haven't seen it since the original Celie, LaChanze, left the cast.
There's a really good choices of shows on Broadway right now - you almost can't go wrong! I have to admit - the Disney musicals are not my favorites ... they're extravagant and lavishly produced - but IMO, cold and sterile (with the singular exception of "The Lion King.")

It really depends on what you like.
Rent is for you if you like rock and showtunes.
Wicked's a more "traditional" Broadway musical.
Avenue Q's a bit like Sesame Street, only going through a mid life crisis.
A Chorus Line and Les Mis are also more traditional musicals that have been revived recently.
If I had to pick one of the above, it'd definitely be Rent. But all of them are good.

Grey Gardens is great. Also, Les Mis is back! Disney usually sucks, I hear Tarzan is crap. I don't know anyone who liked Mama Mia.
History Boys, Rent, Spelling Bee, Ave. Q,
Some Off-B'way shows are amazing too, if you have time, check them out as well.
Awesome 80's prom is a great night of dancing, fun and comedy.
Alter Boys, Jacque Brel is alive and well and living in Paris, etc.

Okay, so here are three different suggestions for three different tastes.
Spamalot-Most hilarious thing ever written, great music.
Les Miserables-Very dramatic, very good, almost, if not all, singing.
Wicked-Powerful music, unique story, very fun, some humor (you would need to see the Wizard of Oz to understand the humor though...not necessarily the musical, movie is fine)

my friends all liked wicked, but i haven't seen it. also, the lion king was pretty good, and if you don't mind some twisted and very un-PC jokes and content, try avenue Q. it's kind of a twisted mix of rent and sesame street. haha, good stuff...
