I'm not sure there are very many scientists who are strict determinists any more, what with the uncertainty principle. The idea of humans being able to perfectly predict the future or past is now completely out of the question.

Of course, if you're talking about gods then you've got a whole other kettle of fish. But the problem with gods is that they are completely unquantifiable. At least for now. You can suppose any number of hypothetical qualities for any hypothetical diety if you like, and perhaps this can even tell you things about the hypothetical universe such an entity would occupy. But I suspect it wouldn't tell you much about this one.

If you ask me, the whole question of determinism misses a very important point: that of time. Whether things are determined or not is only significant if time actually exists. If it does not - if there is only NOW - then questions about what causes what become non sequiturs. Until there is a concrete past or future to compare things to, questions of determinism and free will are putting the cart WAY before the horse.
