Alcohol is a depressant. Your heart slows, your breathing slows, and your blood pressure drops. Your brain is not immune and when the alcohol reaches it and starts to depress it's functioning, you lose consciousness. It is essentially the early stages of alcohol poisoning. Passing out is, in a sense, adaptive. It's your body's way of saying, "Okay, I've had enough...so, much that you are quickly heading toward imminent death. To stop you, I'm shutting you down while you attempt to sober up."

Your body needs to do something to get you to stop consuming alcohol... if it means taking away the conscious "you" then it will do that!
