It's not that they don't want to tell you straight away - it's that the sex organs aren't developed enough to tell.
I had an NHS 21 week scan last week and was told they can't tell the sex until that scan.
However, I also had a private scan at 12 weeks, and was told that they can tell with very good accuracy at 13 weeks, and slightly less accuracy at 12 weeks.
The normal time to find out is at your 20 week scan and the NHS probably don't want to waste time looking before then. But if you have a private scan, they take your wishes into account much more and could tell you earlier.

They can usually tell you at 12 weeks of pregnancy through a scan. Some hospitals won't tell you the sex of your baby due to legal restrictions. They can tell you all you need to know at the second scan, which is usually about 20wks!! Your first scan is usually too soon, but there have been occassions when the sex is very definate. When you go for you 20wk scan, they will actually ask you if you want to know before they start! If you say yes, they will definately tell you! Good luck and enjoy it!! It has to be the most precious time ever!

20 weeks is best. Some will try to at 18 weeks. The further along the better for telling.

I'm 16 weeks pregnant, and go in to find out the sex of my baby next week (we're so excited!!!), so 17 week by my doctor. But it really depends on your doctor. good luck, I hope you have a healthy baby.

They can usually tell you at your 20 weeks ultrasound.That is when I found out with this pregnancy that we were having a boy.With my first son I found out at 19 weeks.

Usually you will have an ultrasound around 20 weeks and they will tell you then. Its best to wait until around then to make sure the baby is developed enough to see for sure what he/she is. I was DYING to know on my child as well! I had to wait til 23 weeks. Good luck!

You can find out at your 21-22 week scan. You have to tell them that you would like to know the sex though. I found out in both my pregnancies. They also tell you that its about 95% accurate. good luck!
