Do you have some carpet scraps? Just "glue" them to the bottom of the shelving unit. Short industrial type carpet is best for this. Glue the "bottom" of the carpet to the "bottom" of the shelves. You can use a thin layer of contact cement of both surfaces, or use clear indoor silicone caulking (small bead all the way aroound, and then an X shape in the middle. THE IMPORTANT THING ABOUT SHELVING IN KIDS ROOMS IS THE STABILITY! 1) Be sure it is not too high, and is deep enough in relation to the height and width, so that it cannot tip over on a child! A few good 4" screws into a 2/4 stud in back of the wall board (or whatever finished surface) will help. If you cannot find the studs, you can use special fasteners that open up behind the drywall (or whatever) so as to be solid. For concrete block you will have to drill. 2) Now that the shelving unit itself cannot fall over to harm a child, you must make sure that the construction is solid. Make sure the shelves are fastened somehow into the unit so that a young child cannot pull thenm out. 2) If you see the child trying to climb the unit. Stop them right away, and inform them of the danger. Use mild discipline at first. No need to beat a child over an innocent mistake. Good Luck

Plywood will not really hold the most weight, I would not buy the "strongest wood" it would be walnut or oak. It would be very cost-prohibitive. If you use a nice spruce or pine and place one-by-two under the front edge it will strengthen the shelving considerably! You can actually place the 1" side against the bottom face of the shelf with a good wood adhesive and a few screws to make certain that it has extra support. Have fun. It won't take long to do this and you will save a lot of money.

Best Wood For Shelving

Well now is appearance important? If so I would go with oak. Very strong & looks great. There are hardwoods more rare & stronger but also more expensive like hard rock maple or Hawaiian koa wood. If appearance is not an issue, I'd go with plywood which you can get 1 1/8" inches thick. They use this for sub flooring on 2 story houses. Very strong but rough looking..inexpensive. If you're attaching a shelf to a wall, you should brace the center to a stud either way.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/z65ME
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Depending upon the thickness. You need to just make sure that it suits the task. If this is in your garage, you aren't going to want to buy oak for shelving. If it's in your living room, you aren't going to want MDF.

Just make sure that the joints are secure and that you haven't overspanned the load.

depends on width and span. Plywood is the strongest but if you have better support their are cheaper alternatives Put bracing a little closer and you could use OSB which is about half the cost
