How much to buy a used, perfect condition (mechanically) Fender Stratocaster? I don't want to buy a knock-off, but the Squier Strats by Fender are dirt cheap ($100 to $3000 and the real strats start at $700 new!

I meant $100 to $300 for the squier, not $3000!

Sort of. Squier is a company owned by Fender which makes cheaper guitars and basses, mostly for beginners. Squiers, from what I remember, operate solely out of the USA. Fenders are made in the USA, Mexico and Japan (or China or Korea?... I'll have to check up on that).

I have a Mexican Telecaster that costs $499, it plays and sounds better than my $1749 American Deluxe Tele. I have a $800 Schecter that plays better than most $2000 - $3000 Paul Reed Smith's. The thing is, this is not uncommon. The price of a guitar does not guarantee great sound/playability or lack there of. Jeff Healy was an awesome guitarist and he preferred a Squire. Yes a more expensive guitar, especially American versus Chinese, will have "better" parts but that doesn't always mean a better playing and sounding guitar. I have 7 guitars at the moment, 1 Mexican, 2 American and 4 Korean made. The Mexican Fender and 2 of the Korean guitars play better than either of my 2 American guitars. My Korean made Telecaster is not only the best sounding guitar I own but the best sounding I have ever played. So my point is this, you must actually pick up the guitar and play it before making a purchase. All that being said, the regular $229 Squire Strats are generally very good guitars, some better than others. The Squire Bullet and Affinity line not so much. You do reach a cheap enough point where the guitars will consistently not be so good. Honestly I don't think you would notice any difference as a beginner between a $229 Squire and a $999 American provided you have someone help you pick out a good one and have it professionally setup, which you should do with any guitar. I do believe that a Mexican Fender is definitely the best deal on a Fender.

They are made from cheaper parts usually in china or mexico or somewhere. I have a 1985 squire strat and it is actually better than my friend's 2001 Fender strat. Ya never know.
