Some musical toy that plays when they press something. Board books. Soft blocks. Clothes - they grow so fast they grow out of everything. I'd stay away from stuffed animals, since they probably already have way too many of them already.

at six months he going to enjoy playing with the paper more than the gift.

Why not a new outfit or something to hang on his crib?

or offer Mom an evening of babysitting with him so you can spend time one on one with him, while she enjoys the evening free.
