English: The longest word in any major English language dictionary is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, a 45-letter word supposed to refer to a lung disease contracted from the inhalation of volcanic ash, but research has discovered that this word was originally intended as a hoax.

Greek:

It's actually hard to say, because
1. there are words for chemicals that can go on and on and on, so there's the question of whether to count chemistry or other technical words
2. you can expand a word by adding affixes: Ex. "establish" "establishment" "disestablishment" "disestablishmentarian" "disestablishmentarianism" "antidisestablishmentarianism..." Is that last word a valid word, considering it's only a modification of the root "establish"?
3. Do proper names, like the names of people and places, count? Do they only count if they are derived from English, and not, say, based on a Native American name for a nearby landmark or a Polish last name?

Manofgent posted the word that I've heard cited as the longest word in the English language. But I wonder if we can add any affixes to that...?
