It depends on your application, and if you're talking indoor omnidirectional antennas versus outdoor sector antennas versus long-distance point to point bridging with dish antennas. You can get omnis in the neighborhood of 12 to 15dBi from many manufacturers, all the way up to 28dBi dish antennas for point to point links up to 10-20 miles.
