I personally drink a quart of apple juice within a half hour which never fails to get things going. If this happens often you may want to try adjusting your daily diet or if that's not an option, take psyllium husks. Just add 1-2 spoonfuls to a glass of OJ daily and you should have no more problems. If it's for a child you may want to get a medical professional's opinion before trying any of these remedies.

If you add ground flaxseed (about 2 tablespoons) to your cereal, or other food daily, you will not have any trouble with constipation. It is also a very healthy supplement, comparable to fish oil. Also, eat plenty of fiber, which is whole grains, fresh fruits, legumes, etc. As far as liquids, drink plenty of water. Exercise, (like a 20 minute walk) is effective as well. Exercise six days a week and it will keep you regular, along with a good diet.
If you are on any medications, read the insert. Many cause constipation and you will have to counteract that symptom of the medicine by continuing to eat healthy and exercising. If it does not, tell your doctor. He may need to change the medication.

Products with lots of sugar will aggrevate your problem, as well as processed and fried foods.

Constipation is the end of the road for many problems. The problem starts when you eat and ends when you get plugged up. Do you eat large meals, don't. Do you brush your tongue so you can taste your food, do. Eat small meals. Are you burping? Get some hydrochloric acid for your stomach. If your stomach is sending signals, get some enzymes for your intestines. Do you have gas? Use acidophiles for the colon. Do a search for hydrocolonic therapy. Find some herbal laxatives that are mild but don't use them for more than 2 weeks at a time. See it's not an easy answer. Your problem is basic to most people. Its the beginning of dis-ease.

Abdominal massage is a great alternative remedy for constipation. You can have a massage therapist make it the focus of a full-body massage. Or a simple home sequence: Trace your large colon with your fingertips from your right hip up to your ribcage, across your stomach, and then down to your left hip at least twice, then trace small circles clockwise around your belly button for a few passes. You can do this any time of day, but it helps do it before bed, before/after meals, and anytime you're feeling gassy.

I sometimes have constipation. One of my friends told me to try extra virgin olive oil and it works! Try taking 2-3 tbsp. It may take a while to kick in but is better for you than a laxitive. Hope this helps!!

Calcium and magnesium works great! A good ratio is 2 mg calcium for every 1 mg magnesium (If you take 1000 mg calcium, you should have 500 mg magnesium).
