Chrome is only the thinnest possible layer on good metal. When you have something "re-chromed" there are some steps involved.
1. The solid metal must be made of iron, not "pot metal" which is a dye cast piece ot auto trim, usually small.
2. All chrome and copper layers are stripped away on sanding machinery, down to the bare iron.
3. Bare iron is now inspected for pits, holes, corrosion, dents, and everything is repaired.
4. Chrome doesn't stick to iron very well, so a cheaper COPPER layer is now added to the metal in an electrially charged bath. Results in a fairly smooth surface, but even this is buffed to perfect smoothness.
5. Expensive chrome layer is now "dipped". Also with electrical charges to bond metal atoms.

Now you can see that anything "dipped" at home will be a temporary solution, and not really chrome. I have seen some liquids for adding a 'silvery' layer to old coins, but is wasn't chrome.

it's chrome plating and you can probably find some place where it's not too expensive. It's too much of a mess and creates bad fumes... you don't want to do it yourself. Go to yellowpages.com and type in chrome plating in your area... it should pop up w/ a whole bunch... then just call them all till you find one w/ a good price... the prices jump drastically from place to place... some people are "really proud" of what they do... some are fair.

There are many specialist places who can do this for you but you cant do it at home.

Have a look in your local directory under Galvanising or even Electroplating.
