My dad's laptop does the same similar thing. When your CPU reaches a certain temperature the fan will cut on in needs of trying to cool the CPU down. I think the reason they make some of the fans that way is because if the fan stayed on in a laptop all the time dust and stuff would get in there real easy and it would be a heck of a job to change the fan in a laptop then it is in a desktop. This is just my opinion I don't have any known facts as to why a fan does that, but my opinion makes alot of sense to me. Anyway noted that your laptop is getting really hot and that's what's kicking the fan on I would not use it that long to prevent damages as noted here by other people.

Well, most fans in computers of all types nowadays are thermostatically controlled. In other words, the fan came on because it *NEEDED* to cool the CPU chip and other internals down. If a computer runs "hot", meaning that it is hotter than normal temperature; it can and will at a minimum shorten the useful life of the circuitry. It can in extreme cases destroy the system beyond repair or salvage in a very short time.

It would be very good to keep the vent clear. Most laptop / notebook computer manuals say that it should be placed on a hard surface, not directly on your lap regardless of the name.

Be happy, and let the fan do its thing even if it shortens battery life or annoys you. It is saving the computer's life and that is a very good thing.

Basically this is an inherant problem with *lap*tops. They are not designed to sit on your lap.
What is happening is, when you place it on your lap you are obstructing airflow and the computer is overheating. To combat this the laptop will turn the fans up high enough so that they become audible in an attempt to get better airflow to cool the CPU and other components.
Best to use it on a desk or other such surface to give appropriate airflow under the laptop.

As a side note I have also seen the same happen just on really hot days as well.

Not sure about your Dell, but my HP laptop has temperature sensing. When the CPU temp gets too high, the fan turns on... I haven't been able to locate any way to control this via Control Panel -- not sure I'd want to anyway!

If you need info on your model, go to tech support on the Dell website. You can locate manuals for your specific model.

Since laptops are so small they heat up quickly the fan comes on to keep important parnts such as your CPU from frying. Keep your laptop in a well ventialated surface and keep all places where air enters/exits your computer unblocked.

That means that your computer is really hot all the time because of the processor. YOu wanna be very careful about keeping your laptop on for a fairly long time because it can overheat and cause major damages. I suggest gettiing this laptop back to your friend if you paid for it because it is about to burn up.

Is there adequate ventilation around your pc? The fan keeps the innards cool, and the climate may be contribution to the indoors temps. I shop mine propped up at approximately 40 tiers on a e book holder.

that's just a way of the computer to cool itself down. when the computer is on awhile, it gets pretty hot. so if you are still on the computer when it's hot, the fan will turn on.
