The Wii is cheaper than the PS3 for a few reasons, and one of them is graphics. The Wii isn't nearly as powerful a machine as the PS3, and the graphics aren't nearly as good. The Wii's graphics are only marginally better than the Gamecube's graphics. But the Wii makes up for that in other ways -- it takes more than pretty graphics to make a good game.

Another reason why the PS3 is so expensive is because of the blu-ray technology. The PS3 has the new blu-ray drive in it - which plays the new high definition blue-ray format DVD's. A blu-ray dvd player on it's own is quite expensive, however the blu-ray is currently in a format war against HD DVD -- and if HD DVD ultimately wins, then having a blu-ray DVD player will be rather pointless.

Not only is the PS3 expensive, but sony is selling them at a loss. The system is even more expensive to produce than the price that they sell it for.

To get the most out of the PS3 graphics, you need a High Definition TV and composite cables. The high definition composite cables don't come with the system, so you'll want to add another $50 on top of the PS3 price to get those too, if you are really concerned about graphics.

Yes, the graphics on the PS3 are much much nicer. The graphics on the Xbox 360 are very nice too, and comparable to the PS3. The Wii falters in that area, however I don't believe that the fantastic graphics necessarily make a fantastic game.
