Mali was a part of the trans-Saharan trade route, which spanned the Sahara desert, and traded gold and salt. They also traded slaves, kola nuts, slave beads, and cowrie shells. The areas they traded with were Egypt, Europe, and a part of the Ghana empire (the Mali Empire took over part of the Ghana Empire's trade routes).
