If God is in full control of our lives, how can we be judged in the afterlife? Every event, circumstance, and decision would ultimately be his responsibility and we would be blameless.
We are in control of our lives and circumstances. God gives us the guidelines and rules to operate effectively and successfully.
The laws of attraction are nothing new. We attract into our lives what we put our attention on. Sometimes we attract bad luck, disease, depression and poverty. If that's what we believe in, that's what we get.
If we put our attention on love, success, good health, harmony and peace, that's what we'll get.
God is omniscient and omnipotent but he expects us to take responsibility and direction in our lives. If he were wholly in control, we would not need the Bible. Isn't it an operator's manual for life and living?
I use the so-called laws of attraction in my life successfully every day but I learned to call them by other names in my youth.
Basically, they are the "what you sow is what you reap" laws.
Put your attention (or faith) on your failures and difficulties and they will grow and multiply.
Put your faith (or attention) on success, beauty, love, peace, joy and grace, and they will also grow and mature in your life. The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. The principles of the kingdom of God can be used in our lives now. We need not wait until we die. One of the principles is the law of attraction.
Jesus said, "For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith."
That sounds like imaging and positive affirmation to me. It's the same principle with a different name.
Have I ever used the laws of attraction?
Oh yes.
My life has no struggle. It flows with effortless ease and simplicity. It is full of love, joy, peace, magic, challenge and excitement. I control circumstances. They do not control me. I am happy. I am not miserable, searching, and in despair. I thank God every moment for my life and it's beauty. But God is not doing it. I am causing it by following his laws, precepts and principles. The law of attraction is simply one of many.

I think that's true up to a point, but that it's representation in pop culture is mostly a fairy tale myth.
It's true if we look at ourselves realistically and accept ourselves, we will live life in a more positive way and this can't help but to make better things happen to us.
The characterization you speak of has a kind of new age/karmic flavor to it. Positive thinking does not free us from reality. You still have to look both ways before crossing the street or bad things will happen to you, no matter how positive you are.

Oh sweetheart, read a book...it's called "illusions, the adventures of a reluctant messiah" and it's by Richard Bach, the author of Jonathon Livingston Seagull...
I used to be a Christian and I don't remember anything about god having control over my life...what religion are you?

God doesn't have full control of our lives anyways...he gives us free will to choose our path, so you would not be denying God by using positive imagery...you will be just using one of his many tools he has given us to make our life better.
