They were almost identical. After the War of 1812 the federalist's party disappeared and only the democratic party survived. The party became more conservative so that after Jackson it became know as know nothings. But Jefferson's Democrats would have recognized Jacksonian Democrats.

Democrats can "have a positive view" on, and "favor," many issues. But when it comes to what gets to be legislation, and which laws actually get applied to whom, Democrats and Republicans serve the same masters of the universe. Quite simply because it translates to an easier life for them and their children, at the expense of the general population. It's kind of a natural survival instinct.
