Our garage door spring broke. Is there any way we can get it open while we are waiting for the repair man? We have tried to open it manually, but it won't budge.

If your spring is broken then the garage door will be very heavy. Here's what I do when I get to a job that has a broken spring and the customer's car is in the garage.

LEAVE THE OPENER CONNECTED. Then take the remote control to the garage door onener and push the button while lifting the door. The door will be really heavy and it wont be easy to lift but the opener will give you some assistance. Of course, if two or three people can lift the door while the button is pushed it will be even easier.

Caution - don't try to use the opener only to lift the door. You can damage the opener.

If the spring broke, you can still open the garage door, but it will be very difficult.

When the spring is attached, it "winds up" when you close/pull down the door, and that provides assistance by "unwinding" when you open it.

With the spring broken, there is no assistance in opening the door, so it is just extremely heavy to open.

If you have an electric garage opener, there is (depending on the model) a manual latch that you need to pull down to unhook it from the power track/chain to allow you to open it by hand.

Look for a release handle there should be some way to bypass the opener usually on the track overhead. They come out with a rope and a handle but most people take them off because it makes it easy for criminals to break in.

wait. you could damage the track by trying to force it.

(is the spring actually broken or just disconnected at one end?)

there is probably a release handle that you have to pull to get it open it should be by the opener itself
