Whether it makes sense or is just a part of folklore is hard to say... I mean, if you believe in the folklore, it will make sense... otherwise, it could be laughable...
I don't have my book on the subject with me at the moment, but a big idea in Chinese horoscopes and geomancy is direction- each sign has it's own lucky direction, time, element, and day all of its own. Where there are opposites in the signs, like, the sign for West meeting the sign for East, (sorry, can't name them off the top of my head), Chinese thinking goes that there will be conflict... but it's pretty complex. Like, you could be born in the hour of the sign for East, and the month for the sign for West, and that'd have it's own effect on you personality.
That's a little bit about how it is supposed to work, but whether it actually does work is another question. Sort of, if you remove the system of belief from its original context, it can be greatly weakened- it's a lot different from one person thinking it's a cool idea to all of society believing it's true... the Chinese system may well say that 'snakes' and 'pigs' should avoid each other, but in the UK you can probably ignore it, and there will probably be no ill effects... geomancy, as far as I can see, is a belief, not a science... (if only the divide was that clear!)
Good luck!

Good question, but all i can offer is my own observation from a pig's perspective. I met this guy at work and we became fast friends. He was a dragon, but we got along. Then I met his girlfriend - the snake. Something was always off between me and her, i basically thought my friend could do much better but i totally kept that to myself, besides they were engaged. But she was a very "silly" person (Or maybe i just didn't "get" her), and I think she felt a little intimidated by the fact that i rarely say anything dumb.
By now you're wondering what happened. But that's just it, nothing happened. We hung out for a good while, we tolerated each other (She and I) and we each even genuinely cared about the others well being.
Then they got married.
I've called that guy 6 or 7 times since then and he never returns my call. I haven't the slightest clue why, but something tells me it has something to do with his wife. In fact I know it, but don't have access to any more info.
Long story short, I think i'll stay away from snakes, cuz when they strike I won't see it coming.

SNAKE-Those born in the year of the Snake can be wise and understated, and are often soft-spoken, placid and compassionate souls. Snakes can have an air of intelligence about them that could be related to their good breeding or philosophical minds. When you anger a Snake, though, beware: they can be vengeful, fickle and possessive, and they are often sore losers.
PIG-People born in the year of the Pig are often peace-loving, accommodating and sociable folk. Pigs have a sensual side that often shows their love of indulgence. While they can be intelligent, some Pigs are naive, which allows less scrupulous individuals to take advantage of them. Gullibility and insecurity can be a dangerous combination for Pigs at times.

It's funny... I always thought it was folklore, but I think the ancients did do some study on what kinds of people went well together. I'm a rat and my man's a monkey, and we do just fine.

Apparently they have opposite personalities that make for a rocky relationship and lots of unhappiness. I'm a monkey, so I'm supposed to avoid TIgers. *shrug*
