I've been watching the show on and off since it started. I know his like was like that and he had the cane when the series began. I don't know what actually happened. I do know that he recently had surgery to correct it, unbeknowst to him at the time. He was shot in it the process of that surgery his boss decided to "fix" his leg. Well, it lasted about six months. He was away on recovery, but it started to act up again when he went back to work. They didn't know if it was stress or if the surgery didn't work. Well, he's back on the cane, so the surgery didn't work.
I went to the website and this is what it said:
What caused House's limp?
A muscle infarction in his right thigh, which it took three days to diagnose.

You missed out! I believe what actually happened was NOT a stroke!! What happened was he had a clot of some sort i believe, in his leg...it caused the muscles to die off, and he had to have a surgery to remove the damaged muscles. I think i explained that right. The cane is to relieve some of the stress on the leg, which gives him constant pain. You are watching a great show, i suggest buying the 1st and 2nd seasons!!! So worth the watch...or you can download episodes for $1.99 each....type in a google search for "House episode downloads" or something to that effect. Enjoy!

Actually is a condition cause by the osbtruction of a vain failling to take blood and oxygen to his leg (is like an heart attack but in the leg) The tissue got severly damage and part of it was removed it; and as a result he suffers constantly pain and needs to use a cane he also nees to take medication for it. If you get season one an episode name "three stories" would give you the full explanation and how everything happened...

I recently saw that episode...in fact there were three people including him facing loosing a leg...he was adamant that he wanted to keep the leg but it would mean that he would live in horrible pain for the rest of his life...instead of removing they took the damaged muscle away to save his life...it was an amazing episode!
Oh if they had caught the real problems 3 days earlier then his leg would have been fine...by then there was so much tissue death from the blocked blood flow they really had no choice.

House had a infection in his leg several years ago and his girlfriend was the proxy (she made his decisions). She decided to allow him to keep his leg, but it would keep him constantly in pain. The cain allows him to walk a little easier.

Misty Justin is right. He had an infarction (blocked artery) in his right leg, which was misdiagnosed. They performed surgery to remove the dead muscle (which left a huge scar). That's why he is addicted to Vicodin, because he is in constant pain.

I think he had a stroke or something, but I'm not absolutely sure. Check the fox website for more answers they might tell you something.
