We are having a christmas party for close friends at our house. Some people have not ever been to our house before others have how do you let everyone know to take off their shoes in the house?

Put a sign in the foyer or tell them when they come in.

This could be seen as an odd request by some. You could provide some cheap house shoes that you can throw away after the party is over. I would just be up front with your guest and ask them to remove their shoes at the door and provide them with the house shoes so that they feel more comfortable without their shoes.

When you greet them at the door say in one cheery sentence, "Take your shoes off and come in." By putting it this way it will come off sounding as though you are saying, "kick off your shoes and relax".
I am a little surprised that your close friends don't already know the house rules. All of those whom I consider my close friends would never traipse through my home with their shoes on mucking up the floors and carpets.

Just behind or next to the door put some shoe 'shelves' to leave a big hint. Then when they come to the door to enter -- say "Welcome -- shoes to the left/right, and straight ahead to the party!" This way you get the point across right away ..

You simply imply "Can you all pelase take off your shoes, before stepping any further?" I have said that all the time,no one takes a offense to it. Its your house your rules. Its not a big deal, really.

You could type up a little sign like they have when you got to an open house that says please take off shoes.

Like the last two people said; a little black dress would be PERFECT for bussines casual!!! It'll look adorable with silver heels and your little silver purse and a soft and subtle red lipstick would look perfect with a pair of cutest earrings ever and a half up half down and half curly half straight hair style (the "up" part straight and the "down" part curly of course) , you'll look cute, professional and sophisticated. And silver and black thing will please you and the dress and the heels will please your husband. Good luck!

havent you seen that episode of Sex in the City, dont be so anal, just let them leave their shoes on, its better than having to pay $500 for a pair of someones stolen shoes!
