Work to live. Always. Nobody gets the same benefit out of doing things the other way round.
Last year me and my partner bought a house which was in a crappy state. We renovated it in the evenings and weekends at the same time as having a fulltime job each and we sold it within a year, jacked in our jobs (he had a well-established career, I didn't) and went travelling.
We have just come back from 6 months travelling and have another 2 to go. All from the proceeds. We know we'll have to get jobs again next year but this got us out of jobs we'd both grown to dislike and gave us a fantastic experience which cannot be rivalled.
On the other hand, we could have slaved away in our public-sector jobs until finally we went off sick with stress or started not caring about the very important work we did.
I think I made the right choice.

I don't really prefer it but it just happened to be this way: I live for work. I absolutely positively love my job and everything about it.
