You can buy an upgraded firewall that compares what it calls "certificates." It works like this. It tells you if you want your computer to go to your bank, then your bank has a certificate as well. If the firewall doesn't find the correct certificate or a bogus one it will tell you that something is wrong.

If you have a firewall it's supposed to stop hackers from changing url's inside your address book that go to sites that look exactly your bank's. But if a hacker has gotten past your firewall it won't matter because a big freaking red sign comes up that says to get off line and run your virus and trojan horse utility. The bank's certificate is stored at a different secure site, so if a hacker gets into both your computer and the bank's server to try and find the bank's certificate, he can't find it because it isn't stored there. Your firewall notes this and gives you the warning.

It also has a service that gives you a warning about known scam sites and a little message will pop up and tell you that the owner of the site has had a number of complaints filed against the owner.

If the owner can't be verified by the internet address, the owner of the site that is selling something hasn't submitted information to properly identify himself. It doesn't mean he's a crook, but would you want to buy something from someone who won't identify himself so he can't be compared to a list of known scammers?

LOL at STIBS ^^^^^^^:"I believe all genuine site links begin with hhtp://uk." NO THEY DON'T!!! For a start off the "hyper text transfer protocol" is http not hhtp and not every site will say "//uk as not every site in the world is a UK site is it Derrr!!

Some of the sites that offer free gifts are perfectly legit and simply give stuff away as long as you redirect enough enough traffic to their site (eg. send this link to 10 or more of your friends to claim your prize etc etc.)

There'e nothing to worry about though, as long as you haven't entered your bank or personal details then the worst that can happen is you don't get your free gift!!

Try googling for the site and/or free gift and you might find information on it that way, especially if it is a scam
