The oldest professional club is Notts County, formed in 1862, swiftly followed by Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City the following year. As other correspondents have mentioned, Sheffield FC can be traced back to the late 1850s (they still play in the lower echelons of the non-league pyramid to this day), whilst the first set of proper rules were introduced by a group of Cambridge University graduates in 1863 (however, players were still allowed to handle the ball; it was at around this time that association football (soccer) and rugby became separate sports in their own right.
In 1871, 15 English teams were persuaded to take part in the inaugural FA Cup competition. It was won in 1872 by The Wanderers, who beat Royal Engineers 1-0 at the Oval.
The first league didn't take place until 1888, contested by twelve teams, and was won by Preston North End, who also won the FA Cup that season (making them the first Double winners), finishing the season unbeaten. This feat wouldn't be equalled until as recently as 2003/04, when Arsenal completed their historic unbeaten title-winning season.

Liverpool have the longest unbeaten home run in all competitions with 85 games but the longest unbeaten League run in English Senior Football is held by AFC Wimbledon who went 78 games unbeaten from 22 Feb 2003 to 4 Dec 2004. This included a complete league season undefeated.

For many years, Sheffield FC claimed to be the oldest club in the world, having formed in 1857. But with the discovery of the Cambridge Rules, it now appears that Cambridge University FC were around in 1856, making them the oldest club...
However, the Football Association says there's room for both clubs in the record books; Cambridge University for the rules and Sheffield as the world's first true football club!
