I don't know how these others found that symbol, either using the Insert/Symbol function or from the character map from the Start Menu/Accessories/System Tools/Character Map method. On my version of MS Word, which is the most up-to-date version, that symbol isn't included. I've never even heard of that symbol, nor has my engineer husband-- is it something pertaining to finance or statistics? It may not be used often enough to be included in the stock set.
Why not just type the M in the next larger size font and put a dot above it with a ballpoint pen? It might save you a lot of hassle.

I'm not familiar with that symbol (mathematical?), but suggest (if you're using MS Word 2003, for example) that you select Insert/Symbol and then search within the given Symbol and Special Characters tables for that symbol.
