The Bible says they were astrologers (didn't call them wise men) sent by King Herod and the Bible doesn't actually number how many astrologers went in search for Jesus.
Also Herod ascertained from the astrologers that Jesus to be 2 years (Herod ordered boys 2 years and under slaughtered) so Jesus was likely a toddler not a new born baby. The star of Bethlehem was a manifestation by Satan to lure the astrologers to Jesus' whereabouts. The only reason why the astrologers didn't grass where Jesus was because God warned them off in their dreams and they scuttled off in their own directions.

King Herod wanted to kill baby Jesus because he was jealous. The wise men stopped in Jerelsum expecting to find The King Of The Jews, (Jesus) in the capital of the Jews. That is when King Herod told them to go find Him and come back to him so that he too may go and worship Jesus. Herod's real plan was to Kill Jesus. The wise men never returned to King Herod. Sometime later King Herod order all baby boys under the age of 2 to be put to death in another attempt to Kill Jesus

As the story goes, King Herod fooled the Magi into thinking he wanted to worship the baby Jesus, when he actually wanted to kill him because he was threatened by another king. Now this is 2000 some odd years ago; you know the story you heard at work last week probably got embellished about 30 times before it got to you. Incredibly people will take faith from a 2000 year old story that has been rewritten and embellished quite a bit more.

they were sent by herod to locate the baby and then reveal his location so herrod could have him killed. The wise men, according to the gospel did not know of this secret agenda so were planning on telling him. however they after finding him (he was actually 12 by the time they found him) went their own way thinking it more trouble that it was worth by that time. So, the bible is inaccurate in the christmas story. Also if you check all astrological charts from then, and the romans were very good record keepers, there is no mention of any astrological anomally. if you need proof, the greeks did not report any anomally nor did the asian astrologers... all of them were avid record keepers. Therefore, we can conclude the christmas story is a lie based on a minor truth.

I may be mistaken... the 3 wise men (or astrologers) were going to seek out the Star of Bethlehem. They spoke with Herod who told them to tell him where the child was. They were on a "expedition" not a mission to kill. They were told in a dream not to go back to Herrod and went home by another route.
So, I don't think they were sent to kill. They were on a fact finding mission. (at least that's what I remember)

They were not trying to kill him. Harrod had sent them to find Jesus on the pretense he wanted to worship the new king. Harrod had heard there was a new king born, and he was jealous and wanted him dead. After the wise men found Jesus, they knew he was the new Messiah and left and never went back to Harrod to tell him where Jesus was.

They were not trying to kill him. They were bringing him gifts. But, the gifts they brought him were a bit ironic. The gold was for his becoming king, and the eternal shining light of heaven. Myrrh was a thing they use for funeral it was used as an embalmeant. Frankensence was used as a perfume in things such as funerals or blessing of the body. It is still used in the Catholic funerals. Also King Herod was trying to trick them into leading him to the child so, that he could kill him. Maybe that is what you are thinking.

They WERE sent by the king to kill baby Jesus, but THEY did NOT want to hurt him. Get your story right. Or just read the whole Christmas story over again to make sure you get it right.
