It's asking me if I want to set Windows firewall to pre-install status. I've got Zone Alarm and AVG Free edition and want them to be my protection. Should i say NO to pre-install status of windows firewall?

Hello,

The simple answer here is that you should a) definately "disable the windows firewall that comes with MS windows. Its utterly aweful anyway. b) definately enable ZoneAlarm as you primary firewall its a far superior firewall product to the built in windows offering.

The answer is definately uninstall norton anti virus as AVG free 7.5 is a far far better anti virus product.

**YES! set the MS windows built in firewall to the pre installed status, this means your turning it off, or disabling it. It means your giving preference to ZoneAlarm and thats correct.

**I've been using ZoneAlarms freeware firewall for about 7 to 8years now and its an extremely good reliable product, as is AVG free (10 out of 10 to both of these products).

Hope that helps?

you mug. the free av programs in the past caused me more problems than they solved. myu sytem would often crash for no good reason amongst other horrs.
I now use www.trendmicro.com pc-cillin internet security free for a 30 day trial but onlyu $39.99 a year for access to there updates. and the best thing with trend micro is that updates are released as frequently as every hour.

if you realy want to uninstall norton and install avgt then remneber to make sure your computer is in stand alone mode (no network connection (unplug the modem or just remove the USB or Ethernet cable from the back of your computer) and if you are using a WIfi enabled computer turn that of in network connections. prior to uninstalling your current A/v program or you will leave yourself open to getting an infection on your system before your new A/v is set up.
as for the question on pre-install state of windows firewall you say yes as this will re-activate windows firewall to the pre install state. so if windows firewall was off before norton was installed it will remain off, likewise if windows firewall was active before it will be active again.
just remeber to test that your firewall is correctly configured and your system is in true stealth status by going to www.grc.com and running the shields up testing program.
it is 100% free to run and is completely harmless to your computer. you will be presented with a list showing your systems exposure to passing threats. if you need to fix anything you will see what needs fixing, normally it is your need to block all in and out ICMP and ICMPv6, you need to block all incoming TCP and UDP connections, and warn on all outgoing TCP and UDP.
the last option of warning you of outgoing connections is the easiest way to set up your firewall. as you allow only processes you know that are authorised to access the net. you block or deny those you do not recognise. if after blocking anything and you are prompted by an application that previously worked or was authorised to access the web you see in the error what the problem is and go to your firewalls control panel and change the blocked process to allowed.
your system is now as secur as it can be online.

good luck.

It doesn't matter.

Windows firewall is designed in such a way that it detects presence of other firewalls like zonealarm before enabling itself.

If any other firewall is installed, the default windows firewall will disable itself leaving the intrusion blocking to the newly installed firewall (like zonealarm).

It's only when you uninstall zonealarm can the default windows firewall show you how useless it is.

Norton is letting you observe what it quarantined. it is in case it has a report that you opt for. Like a puppy. it could be perfect to delete it earlier you uninstall norton. different anti viruses do the same element.

No, say yes. Your firewall was knocked out by Norton so when you uninstall Norton you can put back the firewall.

it doesn't really matter what you chose. pre-install means to turn on windows firewall. but zone alarm will turn it off anyway.

good luck

you have a far Superior system you can download that is much safer..........the nice thing it is free............firewall just helps protect your computer from unwanted viruses from entering your computer. If AVG is asking you if you want to really download this program just stay away..........just say no .but do set up a firewall to protect yourself

You should be covered by zonealarm so you don`t need the windows firewall activated at the same time.

Say=NO.
