I think most people would like to - depending on the circumstances some people may be better off walking away, its all well and good showing bravado but if you end up dead whats the point? I would defend anyone l love or care about to the hilt but not if it would cost me or them more harm than the initial dispute

Difficult one because its better if they can stand up for themselves. At least give them the chance to do their own talking (and they might be able to do it better), before rushing in there. It feels much better to defend yourself than have someone do it for you. But if they seem to be struggling and think they would appreciate you defending them, then do it.
