A pyramid is any volume that starts off large at the bottom and finishes as a peak, where the "sides" are distinct triangles. (The cone is not a pyramid).

The regular thetrahedron is a four-faced figure where all four faces are identical equilateral triangles (one of the faces is the base, the other three are the sides).

The Egyptian pyramids have four triangular sides (plus a square base).

You could have an hexagonal base and 6 triangular sides, etc.

PS:

There are more than one pyramid outside at the Louvres (plus an inverted one inside) and I thought they were of different shapes.
I just checked Google Earth (ask for "Mona Lisa" or go to 48 51 39 N 2 20 10.6 E ). The resolution is sufficient to clearly show that Heythatswhatiwasthinking is correct.

All the pyramids have square bases (therefore 4 sides).

There would be 2 sides to a pyramid... an inside and an outside....

For a true pyramid it would have a minimum of 4 sides... The 3 triangular sides that join at the peak and the base triangular. Flip any corner to the peak and due to the symetry of a true pyramid the base becomes a side and a side becomes a base. So, 4 sides.

A pyramid (like the Egyptian tombs) have 5 sides. There are 4 sides (triangles, each opposite another triangular side) and a square base.

As for the Louvre? I have no idea so stay with the answer 2.

They have 4 sides, 5 if you include the base, if it is a rectangular or square pyramid (which the one you're talking about is). There are such things as triangular pyramids, which have 3 sides, 4 including the base. There are also ones with 6 sides, 7, 8, etc. Hope this helps!
