grabbed you by the hair with both hands & pushed you backwards onto a sofa during an argument, would you leave him? He said I shouldn't complain as it proves he has self control as he didn't "hit" me.
Please say if your m or f in your answer if it's not obvious.

Yes.....leave at once.
If his highest expectations are the fact that he didn't hit you, then he is bottom of the gene pool. You could just as easily have a man who's highest expectations is to bring happiness and joy and have a good life with a loving family.
Relative to the bottom dweller, the man with more healthy expectations, would see "not hitting" someone as not even on his radar.
See what I mean?
The only thing "not hitting" someone and only pulling their hair proves is that he has low self-esteem and is trying to make his surroundings match the sadness in his mind.
My friend once told me that she "tends to look up - not down".
Stop looking down!

Oh, and I so much want this question to only be a wind-up.

No woman ever deserves being treated like that or having that done to her. As far as "self control", he proved he didn't have it by doing what he did! He has a delusion that he can rough you up as long as he doesn't "hit" you and that IS NOT OK! You deserve better and this will only get worse before it gets better. Especially since there was no apology and he's telling you not to complain!

Im a male and that is not acceptable behavouir. He didnt hit you but thats still not acceptable.
Also I have to say I am a worried by his response
"He said I shouldn't complain as it proves he has self control as he didn't "hit" me."
If thats all he has to say about it then you should seriously consider your options. You dont have to put up with that.

He obviously has little self control combined with anger issues. If he said don't complain he didn't hit you, than he thought about hitting you and you can expect that to happen during your next heated argument. Dump him, he's a looser.

I'm a female, I think a man should never put his hands on a woman, it doesn't prove anything except that he wants to control the individual

Leave, do it, you will be saving yourself so much pain if you do it now. It may seem like the more difficult option, it's not. Get in contact with any local support groups, seriously, don't wait. The fact that he says "you should feel grateful" etc I find utterly repugnant.

I had a boyfriend once that pushed me and my back hit the corner of the kitchen counter. That hurt. I left him about a week later because it occurred to me that I deserve better than that! Remember you are worth more than what he obviously thinks of you.
