I'm not too sure if you can understand if that person is lying but what i do realized is that, liars usually trap themselves in their own trap sometimes, having said that, they forgot about that lies (ppl seldom remembers things that didn't take place in reality)
So, ask the same question to that person again maybe after a month and if he or she feels uncomfortable coming up with the same anwer, you knw the answer :)

Nobody is 100% sure if a person is lying or not. OK ... professionals usually can tell, however, as I said, not up to 100%. Not even a lie detector is absolute. However, if a person hesitates with verbal communication such as, 'hum ... ummm..... etc. tries to avoid eye contact, swims around a question, provides a different answer for a similar question you have just asked, then there's a good possibility that he/she is lying.

Watch eye movements. Does this person look directly at you when answering? If not, it could be a lie. Most people who are lying won't make direct eye contact. Then again, some people are so good at it, you can't tell. You can always check up on what they tell you or follow them. I would not be involved with a person I had to check up on though. If they don't care enough about you to tell you the truth, they are not worth wasting time with or on.

If the stiory is too long, it is usually a lie. People have a tendency to embellish the lie. In their mind they are attempting to make it sound believable. I agree with others that there is no 100% way of recognizing a lie; however there are the red flags. My advice is to listen carefully with your ears and with your emotions. Sometimes , if it is someone you know well, you can say. "Tell me about the tears." This statement usually moves people to tell the hidden truth.

If they look away from you, start doing something like shaking their leg, biting nails. Change the subject. Things like that to watch out for.

if it doesn't feel right, when they are saying something - it usually isn't right. you just have to go with your gut - usually, what you first think, when they say something, is the right choice.
