How old is your son? If he is younger, I would start him on a First Act. (Major rock bands use them, but they are inexpensive.) Before you shell out a bunch of money, you want to make sure he's really into it.

see whats ur son is listening to currently
for mainstream stuffs, try getting him the fender
for heavier stuffs, i recommend ibanez gio mikro
and for the amps try roland microcube 5W, it has great sound
and effects modules..

idk but you can just get him a bass guitar b/c some bass guitars have 4 strings, but you have to use your fingers (instead of a pick)
