I don't know, but it's a very old custom, that dates back to the Pagans.

Evergreens where used by the Romans during the Saturnalia festival, or the beginning of winter. The Christmas tree was popular in Germany, and then in Britain when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert, who was German and brought the custom along.
