I mean do they film the episodes the week before they're aired, or have episodes for future releases already been filmed?

It really depends on what country its being aired in. For example. One Coronation Street Episode- UK Soap - Aired in UK - Filmed 5 - 6 Weeks ago
One Home and Away Episode - Austrailian Soap - Aired in UK - Filmed 6 Months ago

It is actually a couple of months. I've noticed when they talk about charecters coming back on a show in soap magazines, it usually takes that long for the episodes to start airing.

It depends on the show and what country it is being aired in. Generally they would be filmed 3 - 6 months in advance.

I've heard it's about 6 weeks.
It gives them time to rewrite scripts if an actor dies or becomes unwell.
