Sixth Century means the years starting in 500 A.D., 501, 502,...599 A.D.

Just like the twentieth century (XXth Century) was the 1900s.

Why? Because the first century started with the year 1 .A.D. and ran up through 99. A.D., and the 2nd century was the years 100 through 199 A.D.

That would mean that the first century only had 99 years instead of 100 years (there was no year 0) but people prefer that to saying that the century doesn't begin until a number ending in 1 (like 1901, 2001, etc.)

The 500's AD ie from Jan 1st 501 AD to Dec 31st 600 AD is the 6th century. The first century is literally the first hundred years so the second century will start the first day after the first hundred years... ie Jan 1st in 101 AD... and it goes on from there.
