I haven't knitted anything since I was a kid, and then it was only a straight foward knit one side & purl the other afghan. Now I'm trying to knit a scarf, and I'm looking over different patterns and seeing "garter" stitch alot. What is a garter stitch, anyway?

What you did as a kid, knit a row, purl a row, is stocking stitch. Garter stitch is even easier, you just knit the whole time. It gives a more ridged effected and it quite stretchy. It's very popular for scarfs as they are less inclined to roll up lenghtwise.

Have fun

Garter stitch is simply when you knit every row. Knitting one row and purling the next is called stockinette.
